The Arcadia High School’s (AHS) Track and Field team delivered a dominant performance in their dual meet against Muir High School (MHS) and Hoover High School (HHS) on Mar 20. Competing on their home track, the Apaches showcased their strength across multiple events, securing decisive victories in both the Boys’ and Girls’ divisions.
Leading up to the meet, AHS junior Simon Huber expresses his confidence in the team’s chances.
“I think MHS and HHS won’t be too much of a problem, I feel really good about the meet,” said Huber.
His confidence was well-placed, as AHS’ Boys Varsity team defeated MHS 106-30 and HHS 123-12, while the Girls’ Varsity team triumphed over MHS 75-52 and HHS 104-27.
The meet kicked off with the Girls Varsity’s sprints, where AHS delivered strong performances in all events. The Apaches held their own against MHS’s traditionally fast squad. AHS managed to place on the podium in every girls’ event in both the distance and hurdle races. The Girls’ Varsity team secured first place in the 1600m and 3200m runs, as well as the 100m and 300m hurdle races. In the field events, AHS’ Girls Varsity team also performed strongly, winning the varsity pole vault, long jump, triple jump, and discus throw, besting both MHS and HHS.
However, the Varsity Boys weren’t slacking off either, managing to best MHS in their favored races, the 200m, 400m, and 800m dashes.
“I’m really proud of AHS this year, we were able to place well in a lot of the sprinting events, even though MHS is normally dominant in those races,” said sophomore Jerry Guo.
Guo reflected on his performance, where he said, “The headwind got me, and I got out a bit slow, but I still managed to get third place.”
Despite this, Guo remained optimistic, where he added, “I’m really excited for my next few years on track. I really feel like I have a lot of room to grow.”
The rest of the Boys Varsity’s events went along without any problems, as they won the 1600m, and 3200m runs.
For Huber, the meet brought a personal milestone. “I’ve never gotten first in a race before today,” he said. However, the large lead he gained during his race made pacing a challenge. “I think in our next races I’ll do better timewise; I was so far ahead of everyone it was hard to gauge time, especially for a race as long as the 3200m.”
Arcadia’s boys continued their dominance, winning both the 110m and 300m hurdles, along with the 4x100m and 4x400m relay events. Their strength extended into the field events as well, with victories in varsity pole vault, long jump, and discus throw.
Junior Wilson Chen, who competed in both the discus and shot put, said, “I PR’d in both of my events, discus and shot put, but both of them I scratched (fouled), so I hope I can do better at my next meet.”
Despite individual challenges, Arcadia’s depth and consistency across all events secured them a clean sweep over their opponents. With momentum on their side, the Apaches look ahead to their next meet, eager to build upon their success.
