The Arcadia High School’s (AHS) Boys JV Tennis team played on Mar. 19, where they lost to one of their greatest rivals, Crescenta Valley High School (CVHS). It was a thrilling game for AHS and ended in a loss for AHS with a score 7-11.
“I honestly don’t know how many years our winning streak was. It was over 10. I know since I’ve been around we haven’t lost before and that’s 8 years,” said Coach Richard Chen.
The start of the match was fiery and challenging to watch. AHS lost five out of the six first matches, and consequently, they lost a ton of morale according to players on the team. They went on to pick up some momentum; however, it was never enough to overcome the early losses that they suffered.
“Obviously it was a devastating loss. As the manager and an ex-JV player that was part of our undefeated streak ever since my freshman year, I felt [the] match [was] disappointing but also a wake up call,” said senior Mason Lu.
As the match went on,CVHS singles came out swinging and ultimately won seven out of the nine sets played during that period.
“It was a clear indication that our competition was rapidly improving, and that in the time that the JV team reigned superior, we lost focus on the greatness and ambition that once made our team so strong,” said Lu. “Our loss this week was a reminder to all of our players to practice harder than ever before in order to prepare us for our next game against CVHS.”
Freshman Jerry Li then did his best to fend off the assault by CVHS and defeated CVHS’s number 1 player despite AHS being down 0-3 and came out on top 7-5. Freshman Donovan Dau overcame their number two singles players 7-5 as well.
“The game on Mar. 19 was tough, but it was fun because I got to play doubles with my friend and junior William Zhang. Although we lost, that game has been the most exciting and thrilling out of all the other games we’ve had by far,” said junior Marcus Kwon. “However, I do think we should’ve prepared better for that game. Other than that it was pretty fun.”
Doubles also had some close matches. Out of the nine sets, AHS won five which made the total score 7-11. In the end, AHS ended in a loss. For their future matches, the boys hope to come back from this game and take their actions into consideration for the next.
