The Arcadia High School (AHS) Girls Varsity Team faced Crescenta Valley High School (CVHS), on Feb. 4 at CVHS. Though the Apaches fought hard, the game ended with CVHS winning by a score of 46-25, which landed the Apaches in fourth place in the Pacific League.
The first quarter began with the Apaches scoring the initial point, but shortly after, CVHS quickly got past AHS’ defense and scored. During this quarter, there was a lot of back and forth as both AHS and CVHS struggled to score. Many times, it seemed that AHS’ lacked communication when passing the ball to each other, allowing CVHS to intercept it. Other times it resulted in the ball going out of bounds. After a few minutes, a point was scored when CVHS executed a layup past AHS’ defense. This first quarter ended with a score of 10-9, with the Apaches leading, and the Falcons close behind.
The next quarter began with Apaches having the ball, but after a missed pass, CVHS seized the ball and headed toward their basket. However, they also had a missed throw to a teammate, causing the ball to go out of bounds. In this quarter, AHS’ teamwork and communication struggled, as most passes to teammates were missed or went straight to a CVHS player. This missed communication led to many lost scoring opportunities for the Apaches. In contrast, CVHS’ teamwork enabled them to pass more reliably and navigate AHS’ defense. As a result, CVHS had more shooting opportunities and ended the quarter with a score of 25-12.
“If I’m being honest, I did not do [well] against CVHS,” said freshman guard Catelyn Chen. “There [are] a lot of things I need to work on, but one thing is remembering to stick to principles throughout the game, since I often forget the simple things.”
The third quarter once again began with AHS in possession, and this time, senior Shirley Freeman successfully maneuvered past CVHS’ defense to score. During this quarter, the Apaches’ teamwork improved, but CVHS’ offense picked up speed as they broke through AHS’ defense more effectively. A few fouls were called on AHS, and CVHS took advantage of the free throws. For a brief period, both teams struggled to score, but eventually, Apache sophomore guard Madeline Tran managed to make an impressive three-pointer. Again, this quarter ended with CVHS leading at 33-21.
The final quarter started with the Falcons having the ball and making a layup through AHS’s defense. As in previous quarters, AHS seemed to miss several free throws, leading to missed opportunities for additional points. Despite the lady Apaches putting forth significant effort to score more points, the game ultimately concluded with CVHS in the lead.
Freshman guard Jolie Chen expressed some of her thoughts on how the game went.
“I think I [played] okay. I facilitated the ball well and got back on defense. But I did get a little frustrated and lost my composure. I need to keep my frustration down and be more vocal [with my teammates] on the court,” said Chen.
