Arcadia High School’s (AHS) Girls JV Basketball team played against Glendale High School (GHS) on Jan. 7. The game was tense; both teams played with a solid defense and quick passing skills, but ultimately GHS came out on top with a score of 29-47.
During the opening tip-off, AHS gained possession of the ball. GHS stole the ball quickly though, making many consecutive shots in the first quarter, passing the ball quickly. With the first quarter flying by, AHS called for a timeout, and they regrouped with Coach Desiree Almaraz. After receiving some guidance, AHS strengthened their offense and made two last minute shots, ending the first quarter 4-11.
In the second quarter things picked up, AHS diving into action with their offense. Due to this, AHS was able to score four points in the beginning with the aid of free throws but after that GHS continuously made interceptions, scoring one point after another. Both teams continued to score, ending the second quarter 15-27.
Freshman Bavya Subramanian commented about the other team, saying that “They were really good on defense and communicating.”
As the Apaches struggled, GHS continued scoring points one after another, ending the third quarter 18-41.
However, the fourth quarter saw AHS picking up the pace, with players #2 Cameron Wu and #5 Vita Hsu, being the most active on the court. Right off the bat the Apaches began to score, and significant play was made by Wu, who intercepted GHS and sprinted across the court, scoring 22-41. Both teams continued scoring, with a lot of shots thrown, but few made it to the basket. Ultimately, the game ended 29-47.
“We didn’t play very well this game, we’ve definitely had way better games. Today we were just all over the place,” said freshman Madison Burnes.
On top of the fact that the Apaches weren’t at the top of their game, “GHS was really good at passing between each other and pressing. There were points during the game where we couldn’t get the ball at all for two minutes straight, which was really frustrating,” said Burnes.
Make sure to cheer our Apaches on as the season continues.
