As the year progresses many are making plans to travel abroad. Hotspots like Hawaii, New York, London, and Paris are all popular destinations for tourists. However, one remains dominant among the most popular Asian countries to travel to: Japan. With its diverse nature, blend of traditional and modern attractions, and favorable economy, it’s no surprise that Japan garnered 2.8 million visitors in just Sept. 2024.
Japan’s Nature
Japan’s incredibly diverse nature is one of many reasons for its great popularity among visitors. Among the destinations is Mount Fuji, the iconic peak of Japan. Standing at over 3,776 meters tall, it gives not only a challenge for adventurers, but a beautiful view for visitors. During winter, the site is also a major spot for both photographers and tourists, as they take stunning shots of the frozen and snowy landscape.
“I went to Mount Fuji with my family, and what surprised me was not only how big it was in person, but how symmetrical the shape of the mountain is,” said sophomore Leonardo Li.
But it isn’t just the peaks of Japan that attract attention from tourists. For visitors looking for a more serene experience, the waterfalls of Japan are equally popular. Fukuroda Falls is located in the Ibaraki Prefecture, and is made up of four waterfalls that flow into a pool below. These waterfalls maintain their beauty at all times of the year, from the fiery foliage in fall to the crystal-like formations of the water and snow in winter. The ever-changing scenery of Fukuroda Falls makes it a tourist attraction for many.
Japan’s Culture and Modern Cities
Tourists may also be attracted to Japan’s rich cultural heritage. Yet again, tourists have a wide variety of places to visit, from the Buddhist temples to traditional tea ceremonies, the options are endless for experiencing Japanese culture. For instance, the city of Kyoto houses over 1,600 temples and shrines, including the famous Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), offering a dive into Japan’s spiritual roots. Nara, known for its huge Buddha statue, is also a popular visiting place. As for tea ceremonies, which are held in traditional tea houses, can be found in places such as the Camellia Tea House in Kyoto and the Urasenke Tea School. Ceremonies typically take place in a minimalist tea room, with the host brewing and serving tea to guests while they enjoy a small meal or snack.
“My parents really liked the ceremony we had in Maikoya, but the tea was kind of bitter. The ceremony itself was really nice, and the hosts were very kind,” said freshman Micah Chou.
Contrasting the traditional temples and shrines, are the busy urban centers that showcase the countries’ innovations. Tokyo and Osaka are filled with towering buildings, unique architecture and fast public transportation. One of the many attractions of Japan are its museums. Modern art museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and the teamLabs Planet museum are among popular destinations.
“I personally really liked the teamLab Planets museum in Tokyo. It was extremely interesting; they showed a lot of unique art, and it was very interactive as well. There was one exhibit where visitors could walk through water barefoot,” said freshman Brayden Jeu.
Japan’s Economy
Japan’s strong economy is yet another reason for tourists to visit. With a healthy economic foundation, Japan has been able to better its tourist services and infrastructure, attracting tourists from all over the world. In 2024, Japan generated 5.8 trillion dollars from tourist spending, not to mention it’s other economic sectors contributing to its stability. The American dollar versus the Japanese yen is yet another reason for people to visit. The great strength of the American dollar allows tourists to spend freely, as everything seems to be cheaper and more affordable. Tourists can shop freely, while still having a great experience
In conclusion, Japan’s great popularity as a travel destination lies in its great ability to attract all types of people from all types of interests. While one group might spend a week touring shrines and temples, learning all about Japanese culture, another group may choose to spend their time touring all the big cities and trying all of the unique cuisine it has to offer. Keep in mind, this is all done affordably because of the strength of the American dollar for American Tourists. This versatility ensures there is something for every traveler, making for a unique trip for all.
