The Arcadia High School (AHS) Girls Varsity Tennis Team played their second game against rivals Crescenta Valley High School (CVHS) on Oct. 24 in a difficult match, seeking redemption for their lass and for the title of the co-league champions, if they won the game. The game ultimately ended in an 8-10 loss. Regardless of the loss, the team was able to celebrate and appreciate their players in their annual Senior Night.
Heading into the match, the Girls Varsity Tennis Team had a difficult loss against CVHS prior to facing them again. AHS’ coach, Richard Chen, stated, “We’ve been doing good. The last round we played against CVHS, we lost. So this is going to be our redemption. We’re going to try to come back.” The Girls Varsity Tennis Team had the possibility of becoming co-lead champions with CVHS if they did win the game. However, they lost the game, so this did not happen. Coach Chen also added that he’s, “confident it’ll be very close, depending on how well the girls are playing.” As the match unfolded, the game continued to go back and forth between AHS and CVHS.
Junior Kaarthiga Selvakkumran and Senior Leia Mar were first time doubles partners in this crucial game against CVHS and shared their insights on their play. “I think that we have some work to do, but it’s okay, because every game is a new game,” said Selvakkumram.
Mar shared her thoughts on playing with their new partner.
“This is our first ever league game together since we switched to the new lineup, but I honestly think she’s a really good partner. She’s been really consistent, so I do have a lot of faith in her. She runs really, really well, and she hits really deep. So I really appreciate her, and I look up to her.”
“Yeah, I felt a lot of pressure last time, [when I thought] we lost. So I feel like there was a lot of pressure to win this time, especially because it’s Senior night,” Selvakkumran said, referring to their fun Senior Night with balloons and snacks prepared. The same feeling was shared across the entire team, as many players felt the pressure to perform during a high stake match.
Ultimately, the AHS Girls Varsity Tennis Team were defeated in with a loss of 8-10 against CVHS. The team’s dedication to the sport and their team spirit will be remembered by the seniors.
