As the Girl’s Varsity Tennis season comes to an end, Arcadia High School (AHS) is ending on a positive note. On Oct. 23, the AHS Girls Varsity Tennis team won a match against Burbank High School (BHS) with a score of 11-7.
Many of AHS’ players, including senior Annika Chan and junior Mallory Wu, were nervous at the beginning of the game since the team was trying a different combination of doubles, leading many to play with a different partner for the first time. Luckily, though, the team was able to adapt to each other’s strengths and style, which was reflected in their games.
“Mallory and I constantly encouraged each other after every point, and we won all three rounds of our game,” said Chan.
Throughout the doubles games, AHS players kept a positive attitude, encouraging each other and having fun. On the other hand, BHS had very strong singles players and dominated the singles games with AHS only winning one match. AHS was far stronger in doubles and played better than singles.
“Many of the other teams simply stack their singles to be much stronger than doubles, and that allows us to perform better in doubles games,” Wu said in regards to the other tennis team as a whole. “But our singles players are also really talented and always try to put up a good fight!”
In the intense games, tensions rose, with one of the BHS players accusing an AHS player of cheating during one of the singles matches. During the game, the BHS player accused her opponent of making bad line calls, which led her to ask for a line judge to clarify the rulings. The call for a line judge set things back on track, allowing for the player to have more security in the line calls and continue their game.
Reflecting on the game, Wu said, “Burbank is a really strong team and they can sometimes give us a hard time, but we always come out on top! But they’re definitely the second hardest school to play against after Crescenta Valley [High School (CVHS)].”
So far, the Girls Varsity Tennis season is going really well, with only one league loss against CVHS.
Although AHS faced some challenges, the game against BHS went well, and they were able to come out victorious, a reflection of their overall season.
