An unavoidable question many face every day is, “What do I wear?”
As simple as it may seem, the amount of thought, time, and effort being put into creating the perfect outfit can be surprising. With the number of trends being established and implemented every day, there is an obvious pressure to keep up. So, what pieces should be bought that aren’t costly and also won’t be thrown out after a trend dies down?
The first step is to think about the basics. These are essentially clothes that go with every outfit. They leave a feeling of being clean and put together, and can be reworn many times. Some examples of these are neutral tops and pants, jeans, and of course, a comfy pair of shoes. Building an outfit with basics can be quick and easy, leaving less stress when going out. Great colors to incorporate include white, beige, gray, and cream. These pieces can be bought in stores like PacSun, Brandy Melville, H&M. Affordable brands for great quality clothing include Old Navy, GAP, and Forever 21.
No wardrobe is complete without a pair of baggy jeans. These jeans not only are extremely flattering, but they also have the qualities of being lightweight and cozy.
Sophomore Angie Wong, who wears baggy jeans often, said, “I think baggy jeans are quite comfortable and easy to style. Other types such as skinny jeans don’t bring as much comfort.”
Similarly, many other types of pants are trending around the world. The list includes cargos, sweatpants, flared leggings, and even parachute pants, much of which was popularized by the younger generation on social media.
However, pants are not the only things that make a bold fashion statement. A good variety of tops will also help in the long run.
“Off the shoulder t-shirts, crewnecks, and sweaters are so cute and they make and change an outfit to look ten times better,” said freshman Britney Chau. “Also backless tops are the move; they are absolutely stunning and iconic!”
Another thing to note is shoes, which can really tie an outfit together. There are a couple types of shoes to note for an elevated look: classic sneakers, boots, and flats. A casual, school-day outfit pairs perfectly with tennis shoes. Outfits that are slightly more sophisticated could even call for loafers. Popular shoes such as Adidas Sambas, New Balance sneakers, Dr. Martens, and Air Force 1’s have been worn by many around the world, and at Arcadia High School (AHS) as well.
A great way to amp up any outfit is through accessories. This can be anything from belts and chains to necklaces and earrings. The difference between wearing no accessories and having a good amount on is significant. They often give detail to looks that are plain, and allow people to express themselves through fashion. Rewearing an outfit won’t be a problem if it’s accessorized differently. Sunglasses, bracelets, hats, and watches are all great inspiration for what to incorporate.
Freshman Vincy Yeung says, “I love this pearl bracelet from Brandy Melville I bought with my friend to match.”
Layering accessories usually looks great with simpler outfits so as to not overwhelm each other. Mixing chunky pieces with dainty ones is a fun hack too! Staples that give off bold looks can include elegant rings and necklaces, fun earrings, and scarves for that cozy winter vibe. Even something as simple as a hairband or clips can elevate any outfit. Accessories can commonly be found at Lovisa, Francesca’s, and Kate Spade, all of which are located in the Shops at Santa Anita, found in Arcadia.
Since California has almost year round warm weather, coats and jackets are often neglected. It can be surprising to see how much outerwear can really affect a look. Sweaters, jackets, and hoodies can now be found in many clothing stores as the colder months arrive. Iconic long coats give off the essence of being intimidating and confident. Not only are they a protectant from the cold, but they’ll attract the attention of many while walking to class. Some inexpensive places to shop for outerwear include Urban Outfitters, Essentials, and Hollister, which can be seen year round around campus.
While there are millions upon thousands of different types of clothing, these are sure to help on the road to a better wardrobe. They’re stylish, timeless, and won’t be leaving nothing to spend. As fashion evolves, many are sure to feel like they’re never going to catch up. With these pieces, fabulous outfits will be achievable while staying on top of trends.
