As everyone settled into the school year this past week, Arcadia High School’s (AHS) Varsity Football team kicked off the year with its first home game against the school, Rim of the World High School (ROTW). On Sept. 13, AHS faced a tough loss to ROTW, ending the game with a final score of 12-21. Despite the disappointing outcome for AHS, the game had some intense and emotional moments and highlights from both the Apaches and ROTW’s Fighting Scots.
AHS’ defense started the game off with a few long runs, but then came back and got a turnover on downs to get the ball back for AHS’ offense. The offense ended up coming up short down to the end of the 2nd quarter with a touchdown from ROTW, which put AHS behind by seven while going into halftime.
Upon entering the 3rd quarter, the Apaches came back stronger and were determined to change up the way they played but they came up short on offense and ended the play with ROTW scoring, which left AHS 0-14. Then, at the end of the 3rd quarter the Apaches scored two touchdowns, bringing the score to a close 12-14. They had powerful stops but came short into the end of the 4th quarter, with the final score 12-21. Unfortunately, while obtaining their win, ROTW dealt with personal issues that in the end brought their team and companionship even closer together.
“ROTW was battling some [adversity outside of Football],” said AHS Coach Eric Elias. “They were evacuated from their homes the Monday before the game so it was also an emotional game for both teams.”
In ROTW’s home Lake Arrowhead, many students and families recently have been or are facing evacuation from their homes due to wildfires and harsh weather conditions. These evacuation orders were mandatory for many of the players’ families, leaving the team in a tough situation even during the game. But all things considered, ROTW fought hard, taking the win.
“Tough defeat for the Apaches, but we fought all game,” said Junior Running Back and Linebacker Timothy Morales.
Throughout the duration of the game, the Apaches demonstrated momentum and strength with a total of 50 plays.
“In the end we didn’t make enough plays to win; we had some missed opportunities and just left too many points on the scoreboard. The team is a young team but has gradually improved each week. We feel optimistic and look forward to our first Pacific League game next Friday,” said Coach Elias.
Overall, the Apaches delivered their full potential and strength while playing. In spite of the final score, the Apaches will take their plays into consideration for their next game and expectantly bring it back home with their next game.
