The girls go toe to toe against Claremont High School

Christie Wang, Writer

Another season is on its way, but will it mean even more wins for AHS Girls Varsity Tennis? Historically, the girls have dominated the Pacific League, which includes high schools in the area, even making it to CIFs consecutively. Just last year, the team ended its season with an overall record of 8-0 and a league record of 4-0. The girls suffered just one loss last year (19-1) and made it all the way to the CIF Quarterfinals where they lost to Harvard Westlake, 11-7. After winning the CIF Division 2 Championship the year before, the Apaches were moved up to Division 1, the toughest division for the CIF Playoffs. However, despite the disappointing end to last year’s season, the team is ready to bring back the heat onto the tennis courts!

The team opened up their 1st league match on Sept. 5 against Hoover High School. Winning with a final score of 17-1, the girls will advance to the next match of their season at Glendale High School. Junior Erika Tang said, “I think our team is pretty strong even though this year a few of our players have been on-and-off the team. We are still winning and I think we will do really well this year in CIF if we keep pushing [ourselves]. My goals are to definitely improve and to play more consistently in matches.” Regarding new blood on the team, she said, “We got some new freshmen and they’re pretty good and a good addition to the team. [I’m just] really hoping to do the best this year!”

Senior team captain Aubrie Weissbuch conveyed her excitement for the new season. She said, “The team this year is off to a great start, as we have 3 new additions, 2 of which are freshmen. They have the potential to do extremely well during the season, and I think having them in our lineup will do us a lot of good.” Not to mention, Aubrie has confidence in her team this coming season: “I think the season won’t be too different than last year was, so we will most likely play through CIF with great results.” Regarding the team specifically, she said, “Our team seems to be binding very well so far, and I think the more time we spend together, our chemistry between us will continue to grow.”

We can’t wait to see our Lady Apaches dominate their league and hopefully CIF as well!
