Stagecraft plays a crucial role in bringing a script to life, transforming written words into a dynamic and engaging performance. It involves the collaboration of skilled students such as set designers, lighting technicians, sound engineers, costume designers, and others, all working together to enhance the visual and auditory aspects of a production.
Junior Jenny Liao, currently serving as the Costume Lead in Advanced Stagecraft, has been a devoted member of the stagecraft community since her freshman year. While her initial interest in stagecraft was unintentional, because she was placed in the course by chance as her first-semester elective, her journey quickly evolved.
“It was honestly a coincidence that I was placed into stagecraft for my elective in freshman year,” said Liao. “It was not my first choice; however, as weeks passed by, I found a new interest in this class.”
In the introductory course, Beginning Stagecraft, Liao gained comprehensive knowledge of the essential crews required to orchestrate a play, including deck, lighting, audio, costumes, and props. Her passion for crafting costumes blossomed during this time, as she already had prior experience with sewing.
She joined Advanced Stagecraft during the second semester of her freshman year, due to the need for additional assistance with the spring musical, Mamma Mia. Liao became Costume Lead during her sophomore year and has continued to excel in this position into her junior year.
The demands of stagecraft become particularly time-intensive, especially when gearing up for a major upcoming production. Liao reveals that a significant portion of her days is spent either in class or in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). On days dedicated to constructing the show, she typically wraps up her school commitments around 7 p.m., allowing her to tackle homework and engage in extracurricular activities. However, during tech weeks, she extends her hours, staying on campus until 10 p.m. for rehearsals. Despite the late hours during tech weeks, Liao strives to manage her time efficiently by squeezing in homework during moments of downtime.
“I often joke that the PAC is my second home,” stated Liao. “The main thing that helps me manage my schedule is keeping a journal checklist, which holds me accountable to complete all my tasks for the day.”
Liao’s next big project is Legally Blonde, under the direction of Mr. Steven Volpe. While she cannot share any spoilers about the show, she enthusiastically notes that the ongoing progress is nothing short of fantastic.
“While Legally Blonde is very labor intensive, all of the stagecraft class have been contributing to building this show,” said Liao. “I believe if we keep up our hard work, we will produce a fantastic show enjoyable for the audience to watch!”
Legally Blonde is set to grace the stage at the PAC from Mar. 14 to 16. Secure your tickets through www.arcadiastage.com or from any member of the production team. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to experience the show!
