International Day of Happiness
March 30, 2023
The International Day of Happiness is a day that celebrates the importance of happiness in the lives of people all over the world. Observed annually on Mar. 20, this day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 with the goal of highlighting the fundamental right to happiness and well-being as essential for human development.
Happiness is a fundamental human emotion that can be experienced in a variety of ways. It is characterized by feelings of joy, contentment, and satisfaction. When people are happy, they are more likely to lead fulfilling lives and contribute positively to their communities.
The International Day of Happiness recognizes the significance of happiness and the role it plays in promoting peace, prosperity, and sustainable development. It is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of well-being and to raise awareness about the many ways in which happiness can be cultivated.
“Staying happy is crucial to benefit one’s well-being. It’s important for both your physical and mental state,” stated sophomore Denise Lee.
One of the key goals of the International Day of Happiness is to encourage people to prioritize their own happiness and well-being. This can involve taking care of physical and mental health, which is essential as Lee stated. Additionally, cultivating positive relationships with others and finding meaning and purpose in life can all aid in one prioritizing their own happiness. It is important to recognize that happiness is a personal experience that can be different for everyone, but there are many strategies that can be effective in promoting well-being.
In addition to individual well-being, the International Day of Happiness also recognizes the importance of collective happiness. This includes promoting social and economic policies that support the comfort and happiness of communities and societies as a whole. By prioritizing the happiness and well-being of all members of society, we can create more equitable and sustainable communities.
The International Day of Happiness is celebrated around the world through a variety of events and activities. These may include community gatherings, concerts, and other public events that promote happiness and well-being. For example, China annually celebrates a Mid-Autumn Festival. Although China isn’t celebrating the International Day of Happiness, the community event is similar to the principles of the holiday’s morals. Social media campaigns and online resources are also available to help people learn more about the importance of happiness and to connect with others who share this goal.
“Staying happy is essential, but it’s hard to consistently maintain,” expressed junior Maya Liu. “Honestly, staying happy as a student who strives for academic success is very hard. Every day I’m loaded with countless tests to study for and assignments to complete, which usually drains my energy and leaves me feeling stressed.”
But Liu noted that the International Day of Happiness does offer hope in the bleak semester.
“With International Day of Happiness creeping up on me, I hope it serves as a reminder to not just me, but to all students to give themselves a well-deserved break and do things that make them happy,” said Liu.
Ultimately, the International Day of Happiness is a reminder that happiness is a fundamental right for all people. To get involved, spread some kindness. Whether kindness is spread through small actions like complimenting someone, or big actions like donating to charity, it all matters! Kindness to any degree is essential for everyone’s happiness. Promoting happiness and well-being, we can create a more positive and sustainable world for ourselves and for future generations. Be sure to make someone else happy or make yourself happy!
