Girls Varsity Soccer vs. Burroughs

Defending their undefeated record, on Jan. 10, the Arcadia High School (AHS) Girls Soccer team competed against Burroughs High School (BHS) to continue their undefeated streak.

Although Arcadia has been undefeated so far in Pacific League, they are expected to have competition with BHS, who has had only one loss in league this season.

With an unfortunate beginning to the game, Arcadia lost the traditional coinflip giving the ball to Burroughs–this forced Arcadia to begin more on the defensive in order to regain control over the ball. Luckily, this unfortunate start had no instance of foreshadowing the end of the game.

After regaining control over the ball, junior Skye Escobedo, along with her teammates, scored the first goal of the game, making the score 1-0. Continuing on that winning streak, after regaining the ball again from Burroughs again in the first half, player Ima Kellerman kicked the ball into the goal to score another point for Arcadia, making the score 2-0.

After the break, beginning the second half of the game, the Apaches began by playing more on the defensive, trying to prevent Burroughs from getting an opportunity to score. However, near the end of the second half, the Apaches began to play more offensively after realizing that Burroughs did not make any attempt to press the ball during the entirety of the first half of the second half of the game.

When asking sophomore Jillian Harriman what the strategy going into the game was, she stated, “The strategy was to play our game and keep [Burroughs] from getting any goals.”

When asking junior Skye Escabedo what she believed aided in her team’s success, she stated, “Our unity and staying together was a skill that was the most beneficial for our team during the game”.

In that, they succeeded! Throughout the entirety of the second half, neither Arcadia nor Burroughs made any goals, making Arcadia the winners of the entire match–allowing the Apaches to maintain their winning streak!

Although Arcadia won this match, they still have a lot more to go. When asking Harriman what she believes her and team could improve on for future matches, she stated, “I think as a team we could improve on communicating and not giving up on the ball.”

After today’s game, the Apache’s truly showed that they really are one of the best in the league. Good luck to the Girls Soccer Team in their match against Pasadena!
