Broadway Presents: Hamilton

Hamilton”, the biggest broadway hit since “The Book of Mormon”, will be coming to Los Angeles this summer for its first ever national tour. Created by Lin Manuel Miranda, winner of the Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Awards, the musical follows Alexander Hamilton, who rose from humble beginnings as an orphan and became one of America’s most important founding fathers. Miranda initially had the idea for Hamilton after picking up a copy of a biography of Hamilton by Ron Chernow. From that point on, the idea slowly took form until it reached its creation as a hit musical. After its debut in 2015, “Hamilton” went on to win the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 11 Tony Awards.

The musical details Alexander Hamilton’s story from his early life in grammar school in New Jersey to his death after the Election of 1800. Through the addictive tracks, events such as the Revolutionary War, Constitutional Congress, and debates over the French Revolution are covered. Various founding fathers make appearances in the show, and it has been noted for the diversity of its cast in playing these integral characters.

The excitement over the show led many fans to try to seek tickets for Los Angeles as early as possible. Although performances at the Hollywood Pantages don’t begin until August, fans began clamoring for tickets as early as December 2016. Officials thus began parsing out tickets in waves. First, on Apr. 19, American Express cardholders were allowed to purchase a specific number of tickets. Then, on Apr. 30, the tickets, priced from $85 to $650, went on sale to the public.

A controversy surrounding the tickets brewed when the Pantages announced that customers who bought season tickets in 2016 would receive initial access to Hamilton tickets. When those tickets ran out, the Pantages introduced a Flex Package, which would allow ticket-holders to select five shows showing at the theatre. However, confusion rose after it was announced that Hamilton was not one of those shows which could be selected. Thus, Flex Package holders were unable to receive early access to the Hamilton tickets. Many Flex Package buyers, mostly Los Angeles area residents, noted that they felt deceived because they had bought the tickets solely for the purpose of getting “Hamilton tickets early.

For those fans, and all others, tickets went on sale on Apr. 30. If you wish to snatch tickets, they are on sale on the Pantages website, through phone at (800) 982-2787, and at the Pantages box office. Currently, Hamilton is on tour in San Francisco, with an additional tour scheduled to begin in 2018. It has also been confirmed that there will be a film adaptation of Hamilton, so get excited!
