Girls Varsity Tennis vs. Crescenta Valley (10/20)
November 3, 2022
The Arcadia High School (AHS) Girls Varsity Tennis team played a home game against Crescenta Valley High School (CVHS) on Oct. 20. The Apaches finished off the game with another win this season, and a final score of 12-6. This was the last match of the league and the team has officially won 1st place in the Pacific League with a record of 12-0.
Overall, the game had a total of three rounds. Each of the rounds consisted of three singles games and three doubles games. Each individual game win was determined by the first team to score six points. Fifteen minutes into the first round, sophomore Anastasia Jorniak finished her first individual match of the day with a score of 6-0.
“I’m proud of my capability of working with my opponent’s weaknesses and matching it with my strengths such as my serves and ability to mix up shots to go for the win,” stated Jorniak. “I feel as if my nerves sometimes should be better under control, for they sometimes unravel at random times.”
Doubles games usually end faster than singles games, but court five doubles was playing it safe in the first round, taking longer than normal as the scores were adding up one after another between the two teams. This resulted in an incredibly tight match which ended with a record of 3-6.
Going into the second round, the doubles players started first as the singles players were finishing off their first round. Advancing into the next round, Jorniak played another singles match against the opposing team, and finished off with a score of 6-1.
Although the teams had been playing well and going strong so far, this particular game was taking longer than usual. Two hours into the game, the doubles had just wrapped up round three while the singles had only started it. The game ended at roughly 6 p.m. as the sun started to set.
All in all, Girls Varsity Tennis coach Ruth Lagace felt that the girls did a great job in their match against CVHS.
“I am proud of how hard they are working to become more consistent, better players,” said Coach Lagace. “I am proud of how well they get along and work together.”
On the week of Oct. 24, the AHS Girls Tennis team will be having their individual league tournament, along with entering the California Interscholastic Federation team competition. A big congratulations to the team for their outstanding performance in this match, and best of luck for the remainder of the season in hopes to continue with much success and finish it off strong.
