What Delays the Tesla Model 3

With just two models on the market, the Model S and Model X, Tesla has been one of the most successful motor companies in America. Tesla has been successful and well known because of two key objectives it emphasizes; high-tech innovations and efficiency. The world knows Tesla well not only because of its perfection on the electric motor but its features, style, and performance. The fact that these cars look luxurious, high-tech, and can outrun almost every other high performance cars without a single drop of gasoline attracts everybody to want one. Unfortunately, only the wealthy individuals could buy them. Starting at $80 grand, these cars are not easy to purchase. The price is the only problem that hinders a lot of people from buying them. However, Tesla recognized this problem and found a solution. Tesla’s biggest goal is to have as many people buy their car and promote the use of electric vehicles all over the world. The solution was to create the Model 3. This new model is compact and simpler than the current two models, but it is now affordable, starting at just $35 grand. The public went crazy when Tesla introduced this model. People were excited to buy one, until another problem came, the release date.

Tesla promised that the Model 3 would come out soon and people were willing to wait, but when the company kept on delaying, people started to ask questions. Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, announced that the Model 3 was going to begin production by July, but actually, there were still some complications that the company faced with the development of the car. The developers had some issues with the design on the car and last minute revisions had to be made. While revising the car, the developers had to incorporate compromises to suit the customers’ demands and government regulations. Tesla tried to predict what kind of packages and features people would like purchase to the car, and as a result, determine the price and the amount of features for the base model and for the packages. Elon Musk agreed that this was a difficult decision and said “I think it’s really guesswork at this point.” Problems like this would need further development and research to the car, thus delaying time to release it.

Besides the development, Elon Musk said that manufacturing is also another problem that would delay the release. Manufacturing cost a lot of money and the company needed to find financially efficient ways to produce these cars. Another problem with manufacturing is that there are so many customers waiting for the Model 3 that the company doesn’t know how to quickly produce enough cars for all the customers. The company had a solution to quickly produce the Model 3 which was to develop a new assembly line full of automatic machines. Musk announced to the public that “I think we’ll be roughly comparable with the best high-volume vehicle production lines in the world. Better in some respects, a little worse in others. But roughly comparable. And then with some further iteration, I think it will probably be a little bit better than the next-best automotive production line.”

The delay of the Model 3 was a misfortune to both the waiting customers and the company itself. About 375,000 customers pre-ordered the Model 3 and overtime, the number dropped as they demanded a refund. The company is also losing money through extra research and development. Elon Musk eventually announced that the Model 3 will finally be released on public roads by 2018.
