With the world watching the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has been one of the most influential political figures in this conflict. And in my opinion, one of the most inspiring and admirable leaders this world has seen. He has refused the offer to go into hiding, standing on the frontlines with the rest of his soldiers. President Zelenskyy has united Ukraine and is putting up a good fight against Russia, fostering national pride and courage in Ukrainians.

President Zelenskyy’s background is not of a typical political leader, which is what makes him so interesting. With a degree in law, he spent most of his career as an actor and comedian. As a political novice, President Zelenskyy was elected for his anti-corruption platform, turning his large online audience into supporters. He’s always had a connection with the people of Ukraine, with a relatable origin and interesting upbringing. 

“Zelensky started out with an incredible amount of credit with the Ukrainian people, as much as he seemed like an unlikely candidate, he was the underdog, he had so much trust from the people, and this trust persevered again in parliamentary elections,” said Governance Specialist Anastacia Galouchka. 

Amidst the terrors of Russia, President Zeleskyy is a major influence on the high morale of Ukraine. Without the spirit and determination he exhibits, standing against such immense power would seem unimaginable. He is being hailed as a hero, not only in his home but from the world too. President Zelenskyy refuses to leave the capitol, Kyiv, even with a target on his back. He’s addressed his people every day, delivering powerful and moving speeches to encourage the country to stand in unity. Fighting on the front lines, President Zelenskyy exhibits leadership that not many political leaders possess. These days, it’s hard to find a politician that doesn’t have corrupt intentions or the will to act on selfish actions. His words and actions have inspired a global audience, and according to an article from  Bloomberg, almost 80,000 Ukrainians have come back to Ukraine to defend their home country. 

Additionally, President Zelenskyy is especially memorable for his unforgettable quotes, particularly about his resolve on staying with Ukraine to ensure its freedom. He is no longer just leading his country; President Zelenskyy is also leading the other world leaders in a stand against authoritarian leadership. 

For instance, when asked if he wanted to go into hiding, President Zelenkyy responded, “I need ammunition, not a ride.” 

President Zelensky also said he is “not a politician. [He is] just a simple person who has come to break down this system,” highlighting the emphasis on his anti-corruption platform.

 In Harvard’s Howard Gardner’s book, Leading Minds, there are two characteristics of great historical leaders. Firstly, they give a compelling story about the journey their people are on. And, secondly, their life and actions represent the story they’re telling.

Like President Zelensky stated, “To all the countries of the former Soviet Union: look at us; everything is possible,”

He also addresses the questions and problems no one wants to answer and gives the public more responsibility than they may be comfortable in. With the personal commitment and realistic hope President Zelensky displays, he embodies the qualities of a once-in-a-lifetime leader. 

Surely, the unspeakable violence of war has given rise to a president we’ve all come to love. I believe he is the type of leader to look up to, a true inspiration who displays loyalty, integrity, bravery, and steadfastness in face of adversity.
