Mr. Delfin’s Photography Class: Fake Compositions

Although it is called a photography class, Mr. Delfin’s course teaches its students much more than just how to use a camera. Students taking this class are also taught how to edit and stitch photos together to become one, as they did with their “fake composition” assignment.

I wanted my subject to pose as though they were jumping on someone because I’d seen similar videos on TikTok and Instagram. Also, I thought it would be funny and unique. One issue I had was that when I took a photo of my subject jumping, the camera was focused on the subject, blurring the background. When I was editing the picture, I blurred the background on the photo where the subject was on the ground to make it look like one photo.

From the very beginning of the assignment, I knew that I wanted my partner to seem like her clone was somehow interacting with her. That concept inspired many ideas: make it seem like she’s pushing herself; have her take a selfie with her doppelganger, or chase after herself down the stairs. I decided on the third idea. Luckily, there weren’t too many difficulties during the shoot. The only slight difficulty I had was the positioning of the second Jessie who was on top of the steps. She needed to be at the right amount of distance from the first Jessie, so that it almost seemed like she was almost going to tap her shoulder.

I chose to be the subject of my work. My idea was to capture modern teen twins in the year of COVID. Both sisters are sitting on the school steps while one is with phone in hand, showing the other a message. Then, I wanted to capture the reaction to viewing the message. I used the stairs as a frame and a tripod to help center my picture. My partner helped me make sure the camera was focused and took the picture. Once I was done with the first photo, I made sure I positioned myself directly opposite of where I was sitting so that I could make my photo as symmetrical as possible. I used pixlr.com to put the two images together then cleaned the hard lines of the split using the eraser, so that the image looked clean.

This picture wasn’t taken for a specific purpose, but I can recognize how it may speak to people and how they view themselves. To accomplish this photo I posed the camera toward a reflection and took 2 photos; one with a subject being visible in the reflection, and one with another subject being in the shade creating a “silhouette-like” reflection. This gives the reflection an eerie feeling and the reality a brighter feeling.

Our assignment was to take a photo with the purpose of creating an illusion where I appear multiple times in the same photo. I got the idea of taking a photo where I was in the elevator while I was also pressing the button of the elevator. This idea came to me after my original concept failed, and I passed by the elevator on my way back to class. I wanted to do something different than my other classmates by placing myself in another location and not just standing next to myself.

The concept for the fake composition assignment was to have two pictures of the same person in one photo to give the illusion that they’re in the same frame. My initial plan was to have my partner jumping in the air while also hiding behind a tree. I decided to take more pictures of random poses just in case I didn’t like the original, but instead I ended up liking almost all of them. So I decided to put them all in one photo. I like how chaotic and unique it ended up turning out.
