Studio Ghibli Festival
April 27, 2017
Do the movie titles My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, and Howl’s Moving Castle sound familiar? They all have one thing in common: they are all Studio Ghibli films. For those who have not heard of this film studio or its movies, Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation film studio located in Tokyo, Japan that has produced eight out of the 15 highest grossing anime films in Japan. It was founded on June 15, 1985, by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, producer Toshio Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. Many people enjoy Studio Ghibli films for their stunning animation style, as well as unique plot lines.
Last year, Miyazaki announced his retirement, which left many in despair over the lack of future Studio Ghibli films. However, in February, he returned with the announcement that he had come back from retirement to direct a new film. For those who cannot wait for the new film to be released, one can also view past films in the upcoming Studio Ghibli Fest.
This Studio Ghibli festival was created by Fathom Events and indie animation distributor GKIDS. It is the first-ever festival that will show six different Studio Ghibli Events in select theaters. The dates for each movie screening ranges from June to November. The films include My Neighbor Totoro, which will be shown on June 25 and 26; Kiki’s Delivery Service, which will be shown on Jul. 23 and 24; Castle in the Sky, which will be shown on Aug. 27 and 28; Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which will be shown on Sept. 24 and 25; Spirited Away, which will be shown on Oct. 29 and 30; and Howl’s Moving Castle, which will be shown on Nov. 26 and 27.
According to Fathom Events CEO John Rubey, “Fans across the nation will now have the unique opportunity to experience these brilliant films as they were meant to be seen, on the big screen with full cinema sound, and together with their friends and families.” The classic animations will be brought back to life in select theaters soon, some of which are ”Hayao Miyazaki’s most iconic works.” To see some of these films, tickets can be purchased on the Fathom Events website or participating theaters starting Apr. 28. In conclusion, for all art, animation, and Studio Ghibli fans, this festival is an essential and exclusive opportunity to see old fan favorite films once again on the big screen.
