Hui Lau Shan is a chain of dessert stores that is based in Hong Kong. The company has opened up stores in the U.S. and has received compliments on its mango-forward treats. Besides the famous mango-based desserts, Hui Lau Shan also specializes in other Hong Kong snacks and sweets. These desserts have made their way to Arcadia this past year and are located at 651 W Duarte Rd Suite E, Arcadia, CA 91007. Its proximity to Arcadia High School (AHS) makes Hui Lau Shan an ideal spot for craveable and refreshing treats.

In terms of products, Hui Lau Shan refers to their best sellers as “Hero Products.” The company is renowned for its handmade mango sweets, which are made from Carabao Mangoes imported from the Philippines. There are also fresh fruit desserts, which combine numerous fresh fruit toppings with juice and pudding. Another major part of the “Hero Product” section of their menu is the nourishing desserts. These treats are made of premium ingredients that incorporate Hui Lau Shan’s original goal of healing the mind and body.

Students at Arcadia High School consider Hui Lau Shan to be a great place to cool off and enjoy themselves.

“This is my favorite place to go to after school and basketball practice because it cools me down and cheers me up,” said junior Keanna Luu.

“It’s my go-to dessert place. I really love the Mango Chewy Ball and the Pomelo & Mango with Sago,” stated senior Claire Kim.

Hui Lau Shan’s expansion to Arcadia is nothing short of amazing, and it is all thanks to Mr. Hui Chi Yuk, the founder of Hui Lau Shan.

Mr. Hui Chi-Yuk created Hui Lau Shan in the early 1960s when he made the decision to continue his late father’s legacy of selling products with herbal healing properties. Thus, Mr. Hui Chi-Yuk began the production and sale of herbal jellies and teas in Yuen Long, Hong Kong. A small fun fact: Hui Chi-Yuk named the company in honor of his father, Mr. Hui Lau Shan.

Hui Lau Shan emerged as a Chinese herbal tea pop-up store. The small, modest pop-up soon evolved into a true, herbal tea store in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Hui Lau Shan began releasing lines of classic desserts that are specific to Hong Kong’s unique culture and tastes. For example, pan-fried radish cake and red bean jelly were being sold. Hui Lau Shan’s greatest success, however, occurred in 1992.

In 1992, Hui Lau Shan invented its trademark of “Mango Sago.” It was an immediate hit in Hong Kong because Chi-Yuk integrated an innovative twist on the classic chilled mango pudding that is popular in Asia. This innovative twist consisted of using the different parts of the mango in order to create a flavor-packed dessert. In the original Mango Sago, there were layers of mango puree, mango pudding, tapioca, and other fresh fruits. Chi-Yuk’s innovation not only put his store on the map but began the company’s transition from teas to fresh fruit desserts.

The popularity then increased linearly and in 2000, the company launched their “Handmade Fresh Fruit Drinks.” This began Hui Lau Shan’s “takeout drinks” concept, which brought in a surplus of customers because of the appeal of the go-to treat.

Additionally, from 2008 to 2012, Hui Lau Shan began to expand. The company opened up stores in various locations across Asia, from Shenzhen all the way to Malaysia. From 2016 to the present, Hui Lau Shan has opened up overseas, including stores in the  United States, and in 2020, Arcadia got its very own!

If you enjoy light but flavorful treats, go visit Hui Lau Shan in Arcadia! The fresh ingredients as well as the love and care that go into each dessert will leave you constantly craving more.
