Unsung Heroes: Mrs. Oh

Jocelyn Liao

Mrs. Esther Oh is a counselor at Foothills Middle School (FMS) and is caring, passionate, and kind person. She is open to everyone and I admire her passion toward any goal. If she sees a bad situation, she would go and offer help so that the problem will dissolve away. Her personality is so unique and her love gravitates toward helping others. Mrs. Oh use to be my biology teacher and we have been friends ever since. After being a seventh-grade biology teacher, she switched to the role of a counselor for FMS. Mrs. Oh was there through my transition to high school, and talked to me about the realities in freshman year. When I really needed the an uprising conversation, she would always be there for me to talk to. There is a big attribute that she holds which is, patience and her listening skills.

Specifically Mrs. Oh helped my through a dramatic part of my life. The story is that someone who I knew had liked me and I thought it was flattering, when this person started to bother me and make me feel uncomfortable. I knew that if I had any problem with the situation, I had to go to Mrs. Oh. I asked for her advice and she helped my conflict reach a solution. I was not to worry about a thing, so I didn’t. She tried her best to solve my problem and made an effort to stop all this drama, and she did! I still am grateful for all the dedication she has put in to all students and to just help as much as she can.

I asked Mrs. Oh what advice she could give to any struggling students and she said “Just because something is hard doesn’t mean it’s not meant to be. We often see a challenge or a struggle as an indicator of our destiny. However, the challenge itself doesn’t define you. Every time you make an attempt to face the struggles, it only gets much easier to do it again. Life is not about how fast you go but who you go with.” She really inspires me to push through in anything and pursue my hopes and dreams even though there will be a struggle.
