Unsung Heroes: Ms. Avalo
April 7, 2017
Typically when you think of the cafeteria staff and the combination of a hectic lunch line and a handful of immature students, there is a sense of camaraderie and sympathy for them. While being packed like sardines in a room is suffocating for a few minutes, it’s hard to imagine how difficult it is to actually handle some forgetful and some disrespectful kids every minute for half an hour. But the women behind the cash register are not at all irritable; with just a simple smile and bright “Hi! How are you?” a sweet smile will blossom on their faces.
And for thirteen years, Maria Avalo has been bonding with students for a few seconds every day – some come back to see her after graduation. Even though she may simply be that lunch lady to some, those who actually make the effort to be amiable reap the benefits of receiving a happy greeting at lunch. Although she may start the day with very simple tasks, like making salads and filling the side bar, Avalo finds that the students are still the best part of her job, even if they are the most emotionally taxing. But it’s worth it, because the students who are grateful for the work that makes lunch as efficient as possible show their appreciation.
With a grandbaby quickly on its way, 2017 will be her final year here at Arcadia High School. Soon enough, she will become a hero to another person who will always appreciate and love, instead of an unsung hero. Cheers to the coming of her first grandchild and thank you for your dedication to our school for so long!
