Nicholas Sparks’ iconic romance novel The Notebook is finally coming to Broadway! This Is Us producer and playwright Bekah Brunstetter will be writing the script, while American singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson handles music/lyrics.

“I am thrilled to work with Bekah and Ingrid,” author Sparks said. “They are amazingly talented and…the story is near and dear to my heart.” The Notebook was Sparks’ first-ever published book and debuted on the New York Times bestseller list in its first week of publication. A 2004 movie adaptation was released starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling and currently remains the 15th highest-grossing romantic drama film of all time.

In the movie, mill-worker Noah Calhoun and wealthy girl Allie Hamilton fall in love. Set in 1940s South Carolina, Allie’s parents disapprove of Noah’s status and wages. He goes off to serve in WWII, seemingly ending their passionate affair, but his return only sparks the turbulent romance once more.

“I have loved the movie and the story for so many years now that the idea of turning it into a musical overwhelmed me. The concept of everlasting devotion and love is close to my personal life,” Michaelson stated in a press release. “I can’t wait for the world to hear these characters come to life musically!”

Similarly, Brunstetter expressed her excitement for the upcoming musical. “I am so excited to continue collaborating with Ingrid on bringing this beautiful story to life in a new way,” she said. “I spent my drives to and from work listening, memorizing, imagining the story…and before I even knew that I had to write the book for this, it was already starting to happen in my head.”

The musical is going to be produced by Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutsch. McCollum has won the Tony Award for best musical, while Deutsch has won a Grammy Award for best show album. Deutsch is also the founder of Sh-K-Boom & Ghostlight Records.

“The creative process works best when the material finds the artist, and that’s what happened,” they said in a joint statement. “From day one, Ingrid and Bekah have had a clear vision for the show, and it has proven to be an exciting collaboration.”

The musical’s timeline, additional creative cast members, and premiere date will be revealed later in production.
